| Dark Guardian,
Excellent question. It's hard to say that there is one that is mainly the best for any and all RLSH, since I feel there are certain types of martial arts styles out there that are better for some than others.
The main idea, is to mix a few styles, one in striking/blocking/etc., and another in some type of grappling form. The advantage you have there is if you're fighting someone who is more inclined to punch or kick, you may want to grapple them. Or if you're fighting someone who is trying to wrestle you, you may want to punch, kick, elbowstrike or kneestrike them.
And at least 1 weapon, because it gives you a better understanding of martial arts in general, such as getting a better feeling for bodily targets. You can also block, parry, and perform grappling techniques with them, too. That is something you're more likely to be able to do with stickfighting. You obviously won't be using something like a sword for grappling techniques, but may perform a knife strike as a combination with a grappling technique.
Anyway, I've been able to mix all of what I've learned into my own personal fighting style, but since you're asking, I would have to say that my individual preference is Aikido, Muay Thai, and Stickfighting. But that's because it's what my body is most conditioned to mentally and physically to the point where the movements feel so natural for me, and they've worked for me in fights in the past.
For other Real-Life Superheroes, I would have to recommend for them to try out some of the following styles of martial arts, and see which ones work best for them:
- Gracie/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Judo - Aikido - Muay Thai - Krav Maga - Jeet Kune Do - Ninjitsu - Kung Fu - Kenpo/Kempo |

| | I forgot to add Tai Chi, or Taiji-Quan. It's the Yin/Yang of martial arts. From what I know of it, if you mix it with other styles, it can be deadly. |

Yes , Pencak Silat is a very interesting fighting style from Indonesia. Pencak is the style from West Java. It varies from place to place , so I assume Silat is to Indonesia as Kung Fu is to China. Many many different styles..
Click on the girls and you'll be directed to the Wikipedia article on Silat. Scroll further down and you will see links to other articles on different martial art styles categorized by school of though(i.e. Striking , Grappling , Weapons , etc).

| I think self defense comes in a sort of tiered response.
Disable the attack Suppress the attacker Control the conflict
First and foremost, you have to be able to disable the attack. A gross motor skill art would be best for this, such as Krav Maga or a MMA style martial art. Arm bars and wrist locks are not a first response to an extremely violent threat.
After you feel you can disable an attack, I think a jitsu art would be the next track, or grappling, if you prefer. I like tiajutsu or jujitsu myself, but grappling might be easier to find a qualified teacher. Personally I hate going to the ground. If I go to the ground, my first job is to get up and get out.
By control the conflict, of course, I mean if a physical threat is present and unavoidable. At that point in yur martial art journey, I would delve into a technical art, such as nimpo (ninjitsu) as I think it is probably the most affective art at avoiding physical atttack and controlling the situation, which is the ultimate goal, if it comes to that. An old friend from high school became an accomplished wrestler and was completely out of sorts with my ability to deflect his attacks using simply ninjistu defenses.
I took the opposite route (meaning I took ninpo first, tiajutsu on top of that and am currently in Krav Maga) but would recommend the path above. |

| Well, I started off learning Tae Kwon Do. Then as I grew I moved on to Taijutsu and Muay Thai (The latter of which I still compete in). I also know how to box some as well.
Believe it or not, I am going to begin training in Capoeira next wednesday. I do not think it will be effective in the streets or anything. But It looks like hella fun. And it's no doubt an excellent way to get in shape.
