well, theres all kinds of lore i could offer here. get yourself a day of the dead mask, it sends the dead back to the afterworld.

get your hands on some scarabs, they have powers like that too.

crow feathers also work. salt is a deterent. a few elementals tattoo'd on your skin wouldnt hurt.

any of this sounding ridiculous yet?

No offense to anyone, but one of the largest religions in the world is based off of stories that lack 'hard evidence.'
That being said, there are many ways that a person can protect themselves from what can be defined as "spirit attacks." In October 2007, I was a member of a local "ghost hunter group" and had the opportunity to visit a formerly haunted site in Steilacoom.
I say "formerly" with an explanation I'll have after my story. We were at the site of the Steilacoom Ferry train tracks, thought to be haunted by both a young man who committed suicide, as well as a mechanic who had been hit and killed by a train.
I offer no proof to this, but I can see spirits. Not communicate, only see, and occasionally hear what I can describe as events from their lives. As I was nearing a section of a cliff overlooking the Sound, I noticed some "movement" near a particular rock.
I had a digital audio recorder on me, with fresh batteries, and the recorder was brand new. I stood on the rock in which I had seen the movement moments before. Suddenly, I felt a sense of vertigo and saw a bright flash in front of my eyes. I recorded my experience in words on the recorder. My recorder also picked up only what I and others can describe as a "blip." I have the file in mp3 format as well as on CD, and a science teacher who was part of the group attempted to analyze the recording. The guy could not find a logical explanation as to what caused the noise to occur just before I had the sudden dizziness.
At the other end of the tracks, at the site of the suicide victim, I saw the spirit of the man-- or rather, just the bottom half of his body emanating from the tracks. At was as if he were repeating the same event over and over again. At that time, the others were too uncomfortable going that far down the tracks, so I went alone.
Two weeks later, the team and I returned to the site. We split into two separate groups, and group #2 was in the area in which I had seen the suicide victim. One person had taken a picture of the very same area in which I had seen the guy's spirit, and captured a mist in one picture, and a second later, captured a bright white flash that encompassed the frame.
On Nov. 1st, 2007, I was again with the group at the site of another 'formerly' haunted site, this one being the Old Western State Sanitarium. I had seen a "shadow person" standing atop one of the ruined structures and took a picture. What the picture shows is a purple orb on top of the building. I have this picture on my Myspace.

Now to the part about the "formerly" haunted sites. I can tell you from experience that certain substances do work when needing protection from spirits. I can't tell you why they work, but they do work. Then again, there's not a scientist on Earth who can tell you why electricity works, just that it does work.
So, what works best in my and others' experience is incense or oil made from Sage or Frank/Myrrh. They have been used for "cleansing" for ages. Cleansing places is simple. Cleansing people is much harder. I have read that applying the anointing oil to your forehead, back of neck and just below your belly button does work for protection against spirit attacks. I don't know much about runes and things from the Lesser Key of Solomon, as I don't like to deal in magick or anything that can potentially attract anything defined as "demonic."
